Is a ketogenic diet high-protein or high-fat?
Shifting your body from being a sugar-burner to fat-burner requires you to eliminate any major source of glucose (sugar) in your diet. The obvious first step is eliminating sugar (duh!), but also greatly reducing your intake of carbohydrates which can turn to sugar in the body. Additionally, because excess protein consumption can form added glucose through a natural process in the liver known as gluconeogenesis, moderating down on protein is necessary, too.
Therefore, a well-formulated ketogenic diet is one that is defined as very low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and very high in fat. This works out to about 70-80% fat, 10-20% protein, and 5-10% carbohydrates of the total energy consumed daily.
